Le répertoire du Caloon Saloon puise dans la musique traditionnelle américaine en général (country, folk, bluegrass, cajun, etc) en plus de revisiter certaines pièces contemporaines et d’y aller de chansons originales.

Le Caloon Saloon, c’est 4 amis (Toots Caloon, Backdoor Caloon, Lil’Buck Caloon et Pontiak Caloon) et une floppée d’instruments (mandoline, guitares, banjo, dobro, contrebasse, planche à laver, harmonica, jug et kazoo) qui s’entassent sur une scène pour jouer, chanter, raconter et vous convaincre que la musique country-folk est loin d’être morte.

I began playing guitar when I was 12 because I wanted to do some wicked two-hand tapping solos like Eddie Van Halen. I had somewhat peculiar tastes for my age and soon moved on to playing blues and later some jazz. I got hooked on rural music very early when I happened to take out Taj Mahal's, "Giant Steps" and a Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee record from the local library in the summer after the eighth grade. I've become involved in traditional American fiddle and banjo music in the last six years. Sometime in first year university, I heard Doc Watson and like many other musicians, that changed everything for me. I eventually learned to flatpick the guitar and soon added clawhammer banjo and later, fiddle to my bag o' tricks. I play fiddle and banjo almost exclusively these days. I've devoted a lot of energy to studying the fiddle and banjo music of east Kentucky.

I currently play in three bands: Little Brown Jug, a trio with two women who sing wonderful harmonies on old bluegrass, old-time, and ballad songs. They also back me up on a fiddle tune occasionally which is a lot of fun. The other is the Royal Mountain Ramblers who do rock, pop, reggae in a bluegrass setting. Sometimes, they let me tag on an old fiddle tune to the end of a song; like Copperhead Road into Washington's March. The third band I play in is the Bogghoppers with Tyler Rudolph and Dara Weiss. We do a little bluegrass and old-time, original and traditional, and have even worked out some wicked dance medleys for playing square-dances. Can you say Boggerhopper Stomp?

With a nod to the hard-edged twang of Uncle Tupelo and Son Volt, the sweet rootsy pop of the Jayhawks, and even the nostalgia of early 90’s Can-con rock radio, this band delivers their blend of rock and alt-country with a direct no-holds-barred attitude.

Built around the songwriting talents of bass player David Pearce and guitarist Andre Kirchhoff, the Jimmyriggers counterpoint their full electric sound and powerful rhythms with strong melodic song structures and vocal harmonies.

Bud Rice is a singer songwriter with an unusually mature vision. With songs describing a world in constant flux and taking on the perspective of a dizzied populace working to find a place within it, Rice has shown himself to be a true spokesperson for his generation. With influences ranging from modern indie-folk such as Patrick Watson and Bright Eyes, to classic country and blues such as Muddy Waters and Johnny Cash, his songs have a richness of texture ranging from spare acoustic to rich experimental composition. Most of his desire to play music, came from his father David Gossage, Jazz and Celtic flute player. The perfect match for his songwriting style, his voice is subtly balanced and deceptively fragile. Immersed in diverse art forms since childhood, Rice is an adept guitarist and pianist who takes every opportunity to put his music into the hearts of many. Rice has been gigging in local venues around the Plateau and Mile End, and has just finished his first EP and is pushing toward an album. Enjoy.

Dara Weiss is a Montreal-born singer and songwriter. She is a dedicated and active member of Montreal's bluegrass/country scene. Early on in life, Dara's father imbued in her a love of folk music. He taught her some chords, which she diligently practiced on his cherry Guild guitar. Her father’s guitar, made the year she was born, is the same one she plays today. The only guitar she has ever truly loved. Dara had stints in rock bands during her college years. She also obtained a performance degree in classical saxophone at McGill University. It was bluegrass music, however, that truly grabbed hold of her heart. As she began to involve herself in the bluegrass community in Montreal she drenched herself in the music of the Stanley Brothers and Bill Monroe. She fell deeply in love with the exquisite music of Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, the voice of Tim O'Brien, the haunting blend of the clawhammer banjo and the old time fiddle. She lay her saxophone down and committed herself to the cherry Guild and mountain music. In 2005, while Dara was living in Thunder Bay Ontario, she collaborated with Cape Breton-born flatpicker Ernie Redquest. The Woodshed Sessions was recorded by Redquest and includes seven of Dara's songs. Dara's main musical project is her bluegrass group Yonder Hill (www.myspace.com/yonderhill), featuring Katie Moore and Angela Desveaux who, along with Dara, sing and write songs for the band.

Dimanche 26 juillet 2009, les membres du SlowFood (la nourriture

lente) Montréal seront disponibles au récemment lancé Marché des

Fermiers Duluth pour parler de ses efforts locaux et internationaux.

Les représentants vont partager d'information et ils vont discuter des

questions liées à la nourriture locale, support des producteurs de

petit échelle, et à favoriser l'éducation de la nourriture.

« Le Plateau est un quartier parfaît pour le Marché Duluth et pour

SlowFood, » dit Gabriel Riel-Salvatore, le président de convivium

(chapitre) , qui a été récemment élu secrétaire du conseil Slow Food

Canada . « Raccordements de la communauté, une histoire culturelle

forte, et un grand conscience vers l'environnement -qui sont tous ce

que nous concerne. »

Parmi les invités de Slow Food Montréal qui vont se présenter au

marché sont Grégoire Bobby, expert de locavorisme, qui discutera les

défis et les plaisirs d'un "régime de 100 kilomètres", aussi bien que

David Szanto, de l'Université des sciences gastronomiques (University

of Gastronomic Sciences) fondée par Slow Food.

Les événements passés et futurs de Slow Food Montréal incluent des

ateliers d'échantillon au Centre Canadien d'Architecture et l'Institut

du Nouveau Monde, une diffusion de la documentaire sur le fromage de

lait cru « Ces fromages qu’on assassine, » une promenade à pied

(visite guidée) des plantes sauvages comestibles de Mile-End, et la

prochaine série de présentations au Salon des Saveurs et Tentations en

août.

Fondé par Carlo Petrini en Italie en 1989, Slow Food est une organisme

international sans but lucratif commise à contrecarrer la restauration

rapide/les fast food et la vie rapide, et à préserver les traditions

locales de la nourriture et sa biodiversité. Au coeur du mouvement est

la croyance que la nourriture devrait être bonne, propre, et juste.

Un grand merci à notre voisin du Marché Duluth. Grace à Vincent, nous étions branchés à son hydro, ce qui nous permettait d'avoir une congélateur pour les viandes, une cafetière, et deux réfrigérateurs. Merci Vincent!
